How I Changed From Been Used To Been A Role Model

How I Changed From Been Used To Been A Role Model

For years, I thought being useful meant saying yes to everything. If someone needed help at work, I volunteered. If a friend needed me to cover their shift, I did it. If a boss needed extra work done without extra pay, I stayed late. I thought that was how you become valuable. I later realized I was not being valued, I was just being used.

The shift from being the person everyone uses to being the person people look up to did not happen overnight. It was a quiet, intentional decision to stop seeking approval and start building respect.

1. I Learned The Difference Between Helping And Being Used

Helping feels good after you do it. Being used leaves you tired, resentful, and empty. That was my check. I started asking myself a simple question before I said yes: Is this helping someone grow, or is this just helping someone avoid their own responsibility?

In my career, this was common. I was doing other people's reports, fixing their mistakes, and taking on tasks that were not in my job description. I thought it made me indispensable. In reality, it made me invisible. People did not see my talent, they only saw my availability.

So I started saying no, but with professionalism. No, I cannot do that for you, but I can show you how to do it. That one sentence changed everything.

2. I Started Investing In Myself The Way I Invested In Others

All the energy I was giving out, I was not giving to myself. I was so busy making others look good that my own skills were stuck. I decided to redirect that energy.

I woke up an hour earlier to learn. I took online courses after work. I started documenting my own work, building a portfolio, and speaking up in meetings with my own ideas instead of just supporting other people's ideas. When I started investing in myself, my confidence changed. And when my confidence changed, people started treating me differently.

3. I Set Boundaries Without Announcing Them

I did not make a speech about my boundaries. I just lived them. I stopped answering work calls after 8 pm. I stopped accepting last-minute tasks without proper planning. I stopped apologizing for being busy with my own goals.

At first, some people were not happy. The ones who were only around because I was useful slowly disappeared. That hurt at first, but it created space. Space for mentors, for real collaborators, for people who respected my time. Your career grows faster when your circle is smaller and more intentional.

4. I Started Sharing What I Learned

This is where the role model part began. Instead of just doing the work quietly, I started teaching what I knew. I helped juniors in my field, but on my own terms. I organized a small training session. I wrote about my experiences. I shared the mistakes I made so others could avoid them.

People don't become role models because they are perfect. They become role models because they are willing to show the process. When I started leading with value instead of just serving with labour, colleagues started coming to me for advice, not for favours.

From Used To Respected

Today, the same people who used to call me only when they needed something now call me to ask how I did it. The difference is boundaries, self-investment, and intention.

If you feel like you are being used in your career right now, you don't need to become rude or selfish. You just need to become selective. Stop giving your best energy to tasks that don't grow you. Start building skills that make you stand out. Set quiet boundaries and let your results speak.

You were never meant to be just useful to others. You were meant to be an example for others. And that change starts when you decide that your own growth is also a priority.
